"The Legal Maxims" or "The Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence" is "Al-Qawaid al-Fiqhiyyah". This is a set of principles or guidelines that direct and inform how Islamic jurists, or fiqh, arrive at legal conclusions. Drawing from the Quran, the Sunnah, consensus (ijma'), and analogy (qiyas), these principles construct a framework, meant to be versatile and applicable when dealing with potential new problems and situations. "Al-Qawaid al-Fiqhiyyah" consequently provides ideas and instructions for applying and interpreting the laws of Islam. Thus, through contextually complex content and a wide variety of sentence lengths, these maxims ensure that Islamic jurisprudence remains secure and relevant for a long time.
